This short course will provide you with a good understanding of how to prevent violence against women. You will gain an awareness of the gendered nature of violence, why violence occurs in our society and what practical strategies you can use in the workplace to take action to prevent violence against women. This short course will provide you with the knowledge and tools to be an active bystander and promote equal, respectful workplaces and communities.
On completion of this Course you will be able to:
- Recognise forms of family violence and violence against women
- Identify gendered drivers of violence against women
- Interpret family violence data
- Understanding everyone’s role in prevention
- Recognise tools for taking bystander action
Modules
This short course has four modules followed by a final assessment:
- Module 1: Understanding violence against women
- Module 2: Causes of violence against women
- Module 3: Taking bystander action
- Module 4: How to be an active bystander

Time and assessment
This short course will take approximately two and a half hours to complete.
There are a number of practice activities at the end of each module to help you check your knowledge.
You will be assessed at the end of the course. For this final assessment, you have an unlimited number of attempts, but you must score 80% to complete this course.
On completion of this course a digital badge will be issued. A digital badge is an authenticated, online representation of the knowledge acquired and can be shared via a range of online platforms.
Why do this course
Active bystander training focuses on the most pervasive forms of violence against women, but the active bystander tools can be used to challenge any form of discrimination, harassment, or bullying. The tools in this course are designed to reinforce healthy, respectful behaviours and focuses on what people in the workplace and communities can do to make a difference. Preventing violence against women is everybody’s business, doing nothing does harm.
