This short course was developed by the Sexual and Reproductive Health Clinical Champion Project, based at The Royal Women’s Hospital in collaboration with Gateway Health, Bendigo Community Health Services and Gippsland Lakes Complete Health. The Women’s are leaders in women’s and newborn healthcare – delivering specialist maternity, neonatal, gynaecology, oncology, reproductive and sexual health services to women in Melbourne, as well as those with complex needs from across Victoria and Australia.

This short online course developed by The Women’s delivers foundation knowledge and skills required to provide comprehensive best practice early medical abortion care.

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • provide an overview of the context of abortion in Victoria.
  • understand the principles of safe abortion care.
  • raise awareness of family violence and reproductive coercion in the context of a sexual and reproductive health consultation.
  • build knowledge and skills of the early medical abortion clinical pathway from assessment to procedure resolution.
  • build knowledge and skills on the principles of post-procedure care.
  • build knowledge of post procedure contraception options and timing.

Course aims

Build foundational knowledge to support awareness and provision of best practice early medical abortion care.

Course Structure

This course includes one learning module, is self-paced and interactive and provides resources for further reading.

A suite of clinical guidelines are available to support the clinical care components of this module.

Time and Assessment

The course will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. The course does not include an assessment.

On completion of this course a Certificate of Completion will be issued.

Why do this course?

Access to abortion is fundamental to women’s sexual and reproductive healthcare, is a human right and an important public health issue.
Every individual – regardless of their age, gender identity, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, social class, and ability – should have access to reproductive healthcare. Additionally, every person has a right to accurate, unbiased sexual and reproductive health information, including options counselling, to support their informed decision-making, health and wellbeing.

Target audience

The primary target audience is Medical Practitioners, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Midwives, Pharmacists and Social Workers who have a role in sexual and reproductive health care.

In addition, the course is suitable for all appropriate workers who seek to understand the context of abortion and the early medical abortion procedure.

Pre-requisite knowledge?

Experience in sexual and reproductive health is desired but not required.

Introductory knowledge on sexual and reproductive health can be developed through completion of the Microcredential – Abortion, Contraception and Sexual Health: Supporting Client Access developed by 1800 My Options a free, confidential, prochoice, Victorian sexual and reproductive health phone and online service, delivered by Women’s Health Victoria.
