This short course has been developed by 1800 My Options, and will provide you with an understanding of contraception, abortion and sexual health rights and options in Victoria and the barriers that can affect access to sexual and reproductive health services.
1800 My Options is a free, confidential, prochoice, Victorian sexual and reproductive health phone and online service, delivered by Women’s Health Victoria. 1800 My Options provides information and referral pathways for contraception, pregnancy options (including abortion) and sexual health. 1800 My Options works alongside hundreds of trusted healthcare providers in Victoria, to link people to the services that best suit their needs.

This course will provide you with an overview of contraception, abortion and sexual health rights in Victoria, along with basic sexual and reproductive health information and options.
You will gain an understanding of systemic barriers that can affect access to sexual and reproductive health services.
This course will further provide you with tools to assist you in your work with clients who are seeking access to abortion, contraception and sexual health information and services.
On completion of this course, you will have a general understanding of:
- abortion laws and rights in Victoria
- abortion options and where to go for assistance
- available contraception options in Victoria
- some common gynaecological health issues
- sexually transmissible infections
- intersectional considerations in the provision of sexual and reproduction health services
Modules
This short course has three modules followed by a final assessment.
- Module 1: Accessing abortion in Victoria
- Module 2: Contraception and sexual health
- Module 3: Intersectionality: unique experiences and access issues
Time and Assessment
This short course will take you approximately two hours to complete. There are a number of practice activities at the end of each module to help you check your knowledge.
You will be assessed at the end of the course. For this final assessment, you have an unlimited number of attempts, but you must score 80% to complete this course.
On completion of this course a digital badge will be issued. A digital badge is an authenticated, online representation of the knowledge acquired and can be shared via a range of online platforms.
Why do this course?
Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures experienced by women, with between one quarter and one third of Australian women experiencing an abortion in their lifetime. Yet despite progressive laws in Victoria, access to abortion and other sexual and reproductive health care, remains difficult to navigate. This course is designed to provide health and welfare professionals with tools to help their clients access affordable and timely sexual and reproductive health care.
